Top 10 Most Searched People In March 2017 and Why

This top 10 list of the most searched for people of March 2017 provides a snapshot of the movers and shakers currently making headlines.

In recent years, lists of the most searched for names and faces have undergone a bit of a change. The usual culprits are still making headlines and fascinating the general public with salacious tales of wealth and excess. Yet, there is now a rapidly growing interest in leading political figures and social activists [1].

Individuals as diverse as actress Emma Watson, supermodel Hanne Odiele [2] and presidential candidate Marie Le Pen [3] are captivating imaginations, even if they’re not always capturing hearts. In fact, Emma Watson was the most recent celebrity to learn a hard lesson about the fickle nature of public interest, when she was criticized for a racy photo shoot [4].

Donald Trump

It should come as no surprise to find the newest POTUS right at the top of the list. The US leader has barely been out of the news since he took up the position in January [5]. The easier question is what didn’t he do in March? One of the biggest stories was his failure to push a flagship healthcare bill through the Senate [6].

Despite claiming a lot of support, the bill did not receive enough votes from Republicans. It was a major blow for the President, who built a large part of his campaign on promises to dismantle Obamacare [7]. It wasn’t the only high-profile blunder to put Trump in the spotlight. Earlier in the month, he announced suspicions that Obama had wiretapped his phone calls [8].

This turned into a huge story very fast, particularly after no evidence was brought forward to support the accusations. In remarkable scenes, the White House PR team went into overdrive and later seemed to suggest that the claims weren’t serious [9]. Despite their efforts, the damage had already been done. There is still a great deal of speculation as to what will happen and to whom, if the allegations are fully investigated.

Walt Disney

The late great entrepreneur Walt Disney is often in the news, but it is usually the release of a new movie which is making headlines, rather than fresh information about the man himself. In March, the studio was the subject of controversy, after it featured ‘a brief gay moment’ between two male characters in Beauty and the Beast [10].

While most of the world championed the move as a landmark moment for sexual equality in cinema, some Asian and Middle Eastern countries have boycotted the film [11]. Even so, it is still not clear why Beauty and the Beast was completely shelved in Malaysia. Government censors removed the scene, but Disney still made the independent decision to withdraw the film [12].

It hasn’t all been bad news. In March, legendary film director James Cameron took a tour around the brand new Avatar-themed attraction, at Disney World Resort Florida. It is due to open on May 27th, and it brings the landscapes depicted in the film to life for the first time. With the next movie in the franchise set for release in 2020, it won’t be long until Avatar mania sweeps across the nation again [13].

Drake

On March 18th, rapper Drake released his fifth studio album ‘More Life.’ It had been hotly anticipated for some time, and it came as quite a surprise to fans. On March 17th, he made an unexpected announcement and revealed that the album would be previewing on his radio show [14]. After the first week, it had smashed a number of sales, streams, and download records.

The funny thing is that Drake was the previous owner of those records, so he’s gone and outdone himself with More Life. According to Billboard, the release was bought, streamed, and downloaded 505,000 times during its first week in the charts. The figure is the biggest in music since Drake released ‘Views,’ which peaked at one million units (and 245 million streams) [15].

This is after a rocky few months in the public eye for the sensitive singer. His very public romance with Jennifer Lopez was the subject of gossip columns all over the world, but it looks like the two have gone their separate ways. It didn’t stop fans from picking up on what appears to be at least two references to his former girlfriend in the new album [16].

Barack Obama

While claims of wiretapping and illegal surveillance swirled about the White House (and made for some awkward press conferences), former president Barack Obama didn’t seem to be paying them much attention back in March. Together with his wife Michelle, he jetted off on a number of luxury holidays, including a stay in the British Virgin Islands with Richard Branson [17].

There are rumors that Obama has been using his break away from the public eye to write a book about his time in office [18]. He wouldn’t be the first president to do so, but his memoir could end up being one of the most read in recent history. It is certainly interesting to see how unconcerned he looks about the allegations made by Trump.

The assumption must be that either there is no evidence to substantiate the claims or, at least, Obama doesn’t believe that an investigation would find any. There have been questions raised about his conduct since leaving the White House [19]. Some people think that his new habit of uploading holiday snaps is inappropriate at a time of such turbulence for the United States.

Like Drake, singer Ed Sheeran also released a new album in March 2017 [20]. It features his massive hit single, Shape of You, which has taken the world by storm. The song is being played on a loop by avid fans across the country, and even the skeptics are warming to this humble boy from a tiny English town.

Within days of the release, a staggering nine out of the top ten singles on the UK Official Chart were from the album Divide. In fact, every single track from the album entered the top twenty. It is now the fastest selling album by of all time by a male artist, having shifted around 232,000 copies in just one day [21].

Later in the month, Ed made melted fans’ hearts again, with the news that he will be making a cameo appearance in Game of Thrones, season seven [22]. It is not clear yet what role he will have, but he’s one of a number of musicians to pop up in Westeros. Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Sigur Ros, and Mastodon are among the bands that have already featured [23].

Emma Watson

It is difficult to imagine demure actress Emma Watson putting a foot wrong. She always presents a flawless media image, even in spite of her fierce, fiery views on modern feminism [24]. Unfortunately, in March, she found herself on the wrong side of the public after posing for a sensual photo shoot.

The Harry Potter star has been very vocal about her work with women’s organizations and charities was criticized for posing topless [25]. According to a number of women online, it undermined her position and her ability to be a feminist role model. The incident quickly sparked a debate about what it means to be a feminist and what is and isn’t allowed.

Eventually, Watson weighed into the argument and pointed out the irony of women telling others how to be a good feminist. According to the actress and activist, the whole point of the movement is to support choice and the freedom to do whatever makes one happy [26].

The Seventh Most Searched Person In March 2017

Nicki Minaj

Rap star Nicki Minaj is not known for backing down, as her online jibes at fellow musician Remy Ma make clear, and she would anger fans in 2017 with the video for ‘No Fraud.’ On March 22, the city of London was subjected to a terrorist attack. Five people died when an assailant drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge [27].

Just a day before, Minaj was on the bridge shooting scenes for the music video, in an extravagant outfit and metallic headpiece. After news of the attack broke, she promised not to feature the footage, because it would be ‘inappropriate’ [28]. Of course, the hip hop singer would later change her mind on this and release the music video without cuts or reshoots [29].

She also spent March in a fierce row with long-time nemesis Remy Ma [30]. The pair has been exchanging insults for close to a decade now, but the situation has been getting increasingly vicious [31]. After Remy released a ‘diss track,’ which was laden with attacks on Nicki’s body type, talent (or lack thereof), celebrity friendships, and love life, the Black Barbie vowed revenge [32].

Justin Bieber

The news was full of odd stories about reckless heartthrob Justin Bieber in March. Not only are there rumors that he had an intimate moment with a male fan, but musician Ed Sheeran confessed to hitting him in the head with a golf club while drunk [33, 34]. As usual, though, it was the singer’s response to public attention that made the headlines.

Bieber reportedly told a fan that she made him feel sick and had no respect after asking for a photo on the street [35]. It is just the latest in a long line of fan-related incidents. The singer regularly thanks and swoons over the Beliebers on Twitter, but he doesn’t seem too happy to meet them in real life. He claims that he gets no privacy and feels like a zoo animal when people try to take snaps of him without permission [36].

While in Australia for his Purpose world tour, Justin Bieber was accused of looking bored, being disinterested in performing, and putting on a lackluster show [37]. In happier news, he was also spotted hanging out with beautiful Aussie actress Georgie Jennings; just one of a bevy of glamorous new friends [38]. It looks like Justin Bieber is a little too preoccupied with chasing girls to care much about his work right now, but perhaps that’s normal for an insanely wealthy 23-year old.

The Ninth Most Searched Person In March 2017

Kim Kardashian

Author: Eva Rinaldi

Kim Kardashian never really leaves lists of the most searched for people. She either has a very shrewd talent for keeping her name in the headlines or the world just really is fascinated by the reality star. The big news in March was her first personal account of the Paris robbery. In October 2016, the model and socialite were bound and held at gunpoint by masked thieves [39].

Details about the incident have been slowly trickling out, but it was her description of the event on Keeping Up with the Kardashians that got people talking [40]. Some praised her for being brave enough to talk about it on television. Others were a little more cynical and accused Kardashian of using the robbery to promote the show [41].

During March, she also revealed plans to undergo surgery on her uterus. Despite warnings from doctors and two difficult births, Kardashian is determined to do whatever it takes to have a third child [42]. It is surprising news because it comes hot on the heels of claims that her marriage to rapper Kanye West could be in trouble [43].

Kanye West

Superstar rapper and singer Kanye West has had a tough year. In late 2016, following news that his wife had been robbed at gunpoint, he had a nervous breakdown and was admitted to hospital [44]. The turbulence continued in March, with unrelenting rumors of an impending divorce. He also dealt with a tragic death in the family, after his infant cousin died suddenly while sleeping [45].

If that weren’t enough, he was sued for copyright infringement by a Hungarian musician. The two would later settle out of court because West had unlawfully sampled a track in his own song New Slaves [46]. While the pair can’t seem to shed claims that they’re marriage is on the rocks, Kim and Kanye West have publically announced that they’re trying for a third baby.

Sadly, even this is not without its pain, because Kim Kardashian is battling medical troubles and may be unable to have another child. There is a lot said about Kanye West and his family. Like Justin Bieber, they don’t really get a break from the constant media scrutiny. It makes it especially tough to watch them dealing with very serious stresses and being unable to take any time out to rest and recuperate.
